Little Vacation

The cows are now in on the fields eating hay. It has to feel like a vacation from having to actively go find the the grass, don’t you think?

It took us a few days to get them all gathered, but we got it done. We gathered the pasture on two different days, gathering one side first and then the other. It is a pasture where we run in “common” with four other ranches so we had to coordinate days to gather and who was going to do what. Once they are all gathered, we put them in a bunch where there was fairly flat ground and sorted them into different herds for each ranch to take their respective ways.

I didn’t take many pictures because it was cold. It wouldn’t have been too bad if it hadn’t been for the wind. I know that Wyoming is known for its wind, but we are pretty spoiled around here and don’t usually have too much. There were several days (and nights) that were pretty breezy though. Two days of windy riding got almost all of the cows gathered though. The next day we went back to look for several missing cows. We found 2 of the neighbor’s, but none of ours. It was really cold and windy that day so we didn’t look around for as long as we were going to.

The following day we went and looked again. We didn’t find anything, but we did go into the next pasture out and thought we saw one that was ours, but it was getting too late in the day to launch into trying to dig through another pasture and look for ours. So it was one more day. We went out and found that yes there was indeed a hole in the fence and, yes, six our our cows had decided that the grass may not have been greener on the other side, but there was more of it. These girls had a pretty long day by the time they hiked clear in from that next pasture. It was good to find them though. Now they can enjoy their little “vacation” of eating hay for a while.

I hope you are some little way to relax in this cold weather as well. You can see that Jekyll is.
